Below-knee femoro-popliteal bypass

About the program:

This program is made for people with below-knee femoro-popliteal bypass surgery.

This program, and all programs for patients with blood vessels’ insufficiency, should be started only after consultation with vascular surgeon or angiologist!

The goal of the program is to improve blood circulation in the lower limb, decrease pain and numbness.

For a full and timely recovery, it is necessary to perform the exercises daily.

What the program contains:

- The program contains video playlists.

- A new playlist is loaded every day.

- The videos combine a detailed description of the exercise with a visual demonstration of how to correctly perform it.

- The exercises gradually progress in difficulty.

34 days of rehabilitation

41 different exercises

388 videos total

Necessary equipment: elastic band, pilates ball

Attention!

All rehabilitation exercises are only to be performed until you feel a stretch up to a mild discomfort. Under no circumstances should you cause yourself any pain. If you feel any pain, please take a short break and resume exercising at a reduced strain level. Overexertion will slow down the recovery process!

Femoro-popliteal bypass surgery (fem-pop bypass) is a surgical operation, that aims at redirecting the blood flow, so it bypasses a clogged blood vessel. It is called this way, because it creates an artificial communication between the femoral and the popliteal artery.

Blockage of the blood flow may be located above or below the knee joint. Respectively, a bypass is placed above or below the knee. The blockage can be caused by various diseases of the peripheral arteries and is not necessarily an absolute stop of blood flow, but could be relatively reduced. After the surgery, the blood supply to the leg is restored, therefore the symptoms, such as pain, tingling and cramps are soothed and the patient’s walk is relieved.

In order to bypass the problematic vessel, a so called graft is taken. It usually is part of a vein and after implantation, performs the function of a collateral of the obstructed vessel.

What is the most common diseases that require femoro-popliteal bypass?

Claudicatio intermittens – the appearance of pain during prolonged walking due to peripheral vascular insufficiency. Pain is a manifestation of insufficient blood supply to the muscles , which have increased need for oxygen when we walk.

Atherosclerosis – a chronic inflammatory disease of an artery, accompanied by the formation of an atherosclerotic plaque, which gradually reduces the lumen of the vessel and therefore, the blood supply to the limb.

Regular exercise after femoro-popliteal bypass surgery improves blood flow in the limb and reduces recovery time after the procedure.

The difference in exercise in patients with above-knee and below-knee bypass is very important!
