Varicose veins are tortuous, twisted or lengthened veins. They form because of weakness of the vessels’ wall, which leads to dilatation and venous valves’ insufficiency. The blood flow out of the limb is troubled, leading to venous stasis.

Most varicose veins are primary. Sometimes they are result of deep vein thrombosis, pelvic tumors, or arteriovenous fistulae.

Risk factors for varicose veins are occupations, which require standing up stationary for a long time, pregnancy, increasing age. There is connection between varicose veins and obesity in women, but not in men. The main symptoms in women are heaviness, tension, pain. In men, itching and dry skin are most common.

There are a lot of complications that can occur due to varicose veins, like swelling, pigmentation of the skin, eczema, bleeding, lipodermatosclerosis, ulceration, inflammation of the vein (phlebitis). The most dangerous complications are the deep vein thrombosis and thrombembolism, which are life threatening conditions and require emergency medical service.

The deep vein thrombosis is a condition, characterized by swelling of the lower limb. The swelling is sometimes accompanied by other symptoms, like pain, tingling, burning, cyanosis, coldness. It is commonly observed in elderly, after surgical procedures, trauma, chronic hearth diseases, or continuous bed rest. This condition is life threatening, if it remains untreated. If you suspect that you have deep vain thrombosis, please consult with your doctor, physiatrist, vascular surgeon or angiologist! You shouldn’t do any exercises if you have untreated deep vein thrombosis!
